Bakkt Holdings is deepening its global Bitcoin strategy by acquiring a 30% stake in Japan’s Marusho Hotta, marking a significant move into Asia’s expanding digital asset market. This acquisition makes Bakkt the company’s largest shareholder and underscores its intent to shape the region’s institutional crypto landscape.
Rebranding to Bitcoin.jp and Treasury Integration
As part of the deal, Marusho Hotta will be rebranded as bitcoin.jp, aligning its identity with its new crypto-focused direction. Phillip Lord, President of Bakkt International, will assume the role of CEO and spearhead the integration of Bitcoin into the company’s corporate treasury strategy.
“This move reflects our belief that Japan is ripe for institutional Bitcoin adoption,” Lord stated, highlighting the country’s favorable regulatory environment and growing market interest.
The rebrand and leadership transition point to a clear mission: positioning bitcoin.jp as a local gateway for Bitcoin-focused treasury and infrastructure services.
Strategic Expansion in Asia’s Crypto Arena
Japan’s regulatory clarity and strong appetite for blockchain innovation make it an attractive base for Bakkt’s international expansion. With Japan emerging as a leading crypto hub in Asia, Bakkt aims to become a key infrastructure player across the region.
This step also aligns with Bakkt’s broader mission of helping businesses adopt Bitcoin as a strategic treasury asset. By embedding BTC into Marusho Hotta’s corporate finances, Bakkt is modeling its own playbook for long-term crypto integration.
BitBridge Capital Finalizes Merger
In parallel, BitBridge Capital Strategies — another Bitcoin treasury firm — has completed its merger with Green Mountain Merger Inc., signaling a wave of consolidation in the institutional crypto space. The merger strengthens BitBridge’s capital base and positions it to expand services in the treasury management sector.
Bakkt’s Japanese investment signals a bold regional push — and the rebranding to bitcoin.jp suggests it sees Asia not just as a market, but a future cornerstone of institutional Bitcoin adoption.
