Bridging Traditional Finance With Blockchain Innovation
S&P Dow Jones Indices (S&P DJI), the world’s leading benchmark provider, is exploring ways to bring tokenized versions of its indexes to global markets. The company is holding talks with major exchanges, custodians, and decentralized finance (DeFi) protocols, signaling a new chapter in how investors may access benchmark products.
Stephanie Rowton, director of U.S. equities at S&P DJI, said the initiative is being pursued with a “strategic approach” to ensure only highly compliant and secure platforms are selected. “By establishing these types of relationships, we hope to participate in a robust infrastructure that supports trading and accessibility of tokenized indexes, ultimately enhancing the investor experience,” she noted.

The push reflects a growing institutional appetite for tokenized financial products, where traditional benchmarks meet blockchain infrastructure. Earlier this year, S&P licensed the S&P 500 for a pilot with Centrifuge, creating programmable index-tracking funds via smart contracts.
Rowton highlighted the early momentum: “This interest reflects a broader market trend as investors increasingly seek innovative and efficient ways to interact with established financial products.”
According to industry data, the tokenized assets market surpassed $370 million in capitalization by July 2025, with Europe, Asia, and Latin America leading adoption.
Expanding Beyond the S&P 500
S&P DJI is also evaluating tokenization of other flagship benchmarks, including the Dow Jones Industrial Average and thematic indexes. Rowton emphasized that different investor segments are showing unique preferences: “We recognize that varying interests will shape which benchmarks are tokenized first.”
Experts argue that tokenization could lower investment barriers, enabling features like fractional ownership, automated trading, and cross-border access.
Rowton sees tokenized indexes as “pivotal in global markets by 2030,” offering new liquidity channels while complementing—not replacing—the firm’s traditional licensing model. “Tokenization is a complementary innovation that expands opportunities without compromising the integrity of our benchmarks,” she said.
As traditional finance and DeFi converge, tokenized benchmarks could redefine index investing, opening access to a new generation of digital-first investors.
