Winklevoss-owned exchange strengthens European presence with regulatory approval

Gemini, the cryptocurrency exchange founded by Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, has received a Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) license from the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA). This approval marks a major step in the exchange’s regulated expansion across Europe.

According to official MFSA records, the MiCA license was granted on Wednesday, positioning Gemini to offer secure and compliant crypto services across more than 30 European jurisdictions.

“Receiving this approval marks a critical milestone in our regulated European expansion, as it will allow us to expand our secure and reliable crypto products for customers,” Gemini said in an official statement.

This development follows Gemini’s recent filing to list its Class A common stock on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the ticker symbol GEMI, signaling the exchange’s broader growth strategy.

Why MiCA Matters for Crypto Adoption

MiCA is considered one of the most comprehensive regulatory frameworks for digital assets in the European Union. Gemini highlighted that clear regulation is the foundation for global crypto adoption, adding that Europe’s regulatory clarity positions it as a leading region for innovation in the digital asset space.

“Today’s announcement cements Gemini’s long-standing dedication to upholding the highest standards of regulatory compliance as we scale in the region,” the company noted.

Building on Previous Approvals

This is not Gemini’s first major regulatory achievement in Europe. In May, the exchange secured a Markets in Financial Instruments Directive (MiFID II) license, enabling it to offer derivatives trading within the EU market.

With both MiCA and MiFID II approvals, Gemini now holds a strong regulatory foundation to deliver crypto spot trading, derivatives, and related financial services under strict compliance standards.

Industry analysts suggest this move strengthens investor confidence and institutional adoption in the European market, as regulated exchanges like Gemini offer transparency and security.
