Political Satire Meets Crypto as Newsom Targets Trump’s Digital Asset Ventures
California Governor Gavin Newsom has teased the launch of a “Trump Corruption Coin,” a satirical memecoin aimed at highlighting what he calls the absurdity of former President Donald Trump’s growing involvement in cryptocurrency.
Speaking on the “Pivot” podcast, Newsom said the coin will be part of his broader Campaign for Democracy initiative, with proceeds supporting redistricting efforts and voter outreach.
“We’re about to put a meme coin out,” Newsom stated. “And you know what, Donald Trump? We’ll see how well your coin does versus our coin.” When asked if it would be called “Gavin Coin,” he responded: “No, it’s Trump Corruption Coin.”
According to Newsom, the move is intended to “turn up the heat” and draw attention to what he described as Trump’s opportunistic ventures. “This is one of the great grifters of our time. None of this is normal,” he added.
Trump’s Growing Crypto Fortune
Trump has heavily embraced crypto since leaving office, monetizing his brand through NFT collections, personal memecoins, and high-profile partnerships. In June, he disclosed earning $57.4 million from World Liberty Financial, where he holds 15.75 billion governance tokens, according to filings with the Office of Government Ethics.
Reports suggest Trump’s crypto-related ventures have generated over $2.4 billion since 2022, accounting for nearly 44% of his current wealth. His company, Trump Media and Technology Group, also claimed to hold over $2 billion in Bitcoin and other digital assets as of July.
Political Theater on Social Media
The announcement comes as Newsom amplifies his online parody campaign, mocking Trump’s all-caps tweet style through his official X account. In one post, he wrote:
“EXCEPT WHAT IS WRITTEN AND BROADCAST IN THE FAKE NEWS, I NOW HAVE THE HIGHEST POLL NUMBERS I’VE EVER HAD. MAKE AMERICA GAVIN AGAIN!!! — GCN”
Whether Trump Corruption Coin will actually launch remains unclear, but the governor’s move signals a new frontier where politics, crypto, and satire collide ahead of the 2026 election cycle.
