Consensys founder signals long-term incentives despite sharp post-airdrop sell-off

Linea’s token price has dropped more than 20% within 24 hours of its debut, but project founder Joseph Lubin has hinted that long-term holders could see future rewards. His remarks have sparked debate over the token’s utility and potential role within the broader Consensys ecosystem.

Lubin promises incentives for committed holders

In a post on X, Lubin suggested that Linea’s community members may qualify for future distributions if they maintain their holdings. “If we notice, at some date in the future, that you’ve held n LINEA tokens for m days, that just might lead to another token landing in your account,” he wrote.

Lubin emphasized that holding tokens reflects community participation and could be tied to new initiatives involving both Linea and MetaMask. While details remain scarce, his message appears designed to calm concerns about the token’s immediate lack of utility.

Community calls for utility and staking options

The comments came after users questioned how holders could benefit from their Linea tokens. One community member urged the team to introduce staking or lending platforms, saying, “Users do not know what to do with the Linea they are holding.”

Reactions were mixed. Some critics labeled Linea a “memecoin with no utility,” while others pushed for buyback strategies as a way to sustain demand. The debate underscores uncertainty around how the project intends to position its native token in the long term.

Price volatility after token generation event

Linea’s Token Generation Event (TGE) distributed 85% of supply to the ecosystem, with the remaining 15% allocated to Consensys. Following the launch, the token briefly hit $0.046 before sliding to $0.024, according to CoinGecko — a decline of over 20% in a single day.

Analysts note that sharp sell-offs are common after major airdrops. However, Lubin’s comments may indicate that Consensys plans to introduce ecosystem-based rewards to encourage retention.

The token’s trajectory will depend on whether Linea can deliver meaningful utility beyond speculation. As one blockchain researcher observed, “Utility, not just distribution, will determine whether Linea builds long-term value.”
