Speculation over token distribution triggers volatility in Aave’s market

The decentralized finance (DeFi) sector faced turbulence as Aave’s token price dropped by over 8%, following unverified claims regarding its association with World Liberty Financial (WLFI). The rumors suggested that Aave’s decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) might receive a significant allocation of WLFI tokens.

According to reports, an October 2024 governance proposal outlined that Aave could be granted 7% of WLFI’s total token supply along with 20% of protocol revenues from its integration on Aave v3. However, the WLFI team later denied these claims, labeling them as “false information.”

“The statement that Aave will receive 7% of WLFI’s supply is completely inaccurate,” sources familiar with the matter clarified, sparking debate across social media platforms.

Despite the denial, Aave’s price fell sharply from around $385 to $339 before stabilizing near $352. Market analysts believe this price movement highlights the sensitivity of DeFi tokens to governance rumors and institutional involvement.

DeFi TVL rose sharply

DeFi Growth and Institutional Interest

The speculation comes amid renewed interest in decentralized finance, with the sector’s total value locked (TVL) surpassing $167 billion, according to recent data. This surge follows expectations of a more favorable regulatory environment after the 2024 U.S. elections.

Industry experts warn that rumors and unverified proposals can create unnecessary volatility, especially as institutional players and governance protocols become more interconnected.

“Transparency and timely communication are essential in DeFi governance. Even a small rumor can move markets significantly,” one analyst noted.

The involvement of traditional finance institutions and governance debates has fueled discussions about whether DeFi can maintain its permissionless and decentralized ethos in the face of increasing institutional participation.
