FIFA has announced its partnership with Avalanche to build a new EVM-compatible blockchain network tailored to the global football organization’s digital strategy. This move marks a major shift in FIFA’s Web3 approach, as it plans to migrate its existing NFT collections from Algorand and Polygon onto this new infrastructure.
“By moving to Avalanche, FIFA aims to unify its digital assets under one high-performance, scalable platform,” the organization stated in a press release.
NFT Migration from Algorand and Polygon
Previously, FIFA had launched NFTs on Algorand during the World Cup Qatar 2022, and some assets were later made available on Polygon marketplaces. However, the new Avalanche-based network will consolidate all existing and future digital collectibles, creating a more seamless experience for users.
“Our collaboration with Avalanche allows us to scale globally while enhancing fan engagement and asset security,” said Romy Gai, FIFA’s Chief Business Officer.
This migration will begin in phases over the coming months, with NFT holders receiving full support to transfer their assets safely.
Avalanche Subnet to Power FIFA’s Digital Ecosystem
FIFA’s blockchain will operate as an Avalanche subnet, providing benefits such as low transaction fees, faster settlement times, and customized governance. Subnets are isolated networks within Avalanche’s ecosystem, offering the flexibility needed for FIFA’s unique requirements.
“Avalanche’s tech stack gives FIFA the control and scalability to innovate in Web3,” said Ava Labs CEO Emin Gün Sirer.
The subnet will support Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) compatibility, allowing developers to easily deploy existing Ethereum-based smart contracts and tools within FIFA’s ecosystem.
Enhancing Fan Engagement Through Digital Collectibles
The partnership also aims to deepen fan engagement by offering interactive NFT experiences, digital game assets, and possibly Web3 ticketing solutions in the future. FIFA will explore integrations that reward fans for interaction, gamify content, and even allow for NFT-based voting systems in fan polls.
“This is about building a digital stadium for fans around the world,” Gai added.
Conclusion
This transition to Avalanche signifies FIFA’s growing commitment to Web3 and blockchain technology. By moving away from multi-chain deployments and focusing on a single, optimized subnet, FIFA is setting the stage for long-term innovation in fan engagement, digital ownership, and event experiences.
“FIFA is building the future of football fandom on Avalanche,” said Gün Sirer.
