Bitcoin Replaces Cash as Core Treasury Asset for MSTR
Strategy (MSTR) has solidified its position as one of the most aggressive corporate adopters of Bitcoin, now holding approximately $65 billion worth of BTC on its balance sheet. This places it 11th among U.S. companies by corporate treasury size, just behind NVIDIA’s $66 billion in cash reserves, and far below Berkshire Hathaway’s industry-leading $410 billion in liquid assets.
Strategy’s Bitcoin holdings have rapidly grown into a dominant treasury asset, underscoring a shift in how corporations manage reserve capital.
Bitcoin Holdings Outperform Traditional Treasury Benchmarks
The company’s bold strategy includes not only holding large amounts of Bitcoin but also issuing perpetual preferred stock as part of its broader $42 billion capital plan. According to recent investor disclosures, Strategy’s STRK shares have risen 51%, while STRF is up 38% and STRD has climbed 12%. These returns outperform the iShares Preferred and Income Securities ETF (PFF), the benchmark Strategy uses to compare yield performance.
MSTR’s preferred stock series are beating traditional income investments, attracting institutional and high-net-worth capital.
Strong Progress Toward 2025 Bitcoin Targets
In its mid-year update, Strategy stated that it is on track to meet two core 2025 performance targets:
Bitcoin yield target: 25% – Currently achieved: 19.7%
Dollar gain target: $15 billion – Currently achieved: $9.6 billion
Additionally, the firm has recorded an unrealized gain of $14 billion on its digital asset portfolio during the second quarter alone. This performance aligns with CEO Michael Saylor’s long-term vision of treating Bitcoin as a superior form of corporate savings.
Bitcoin Adoption Redefines Treasury Management
The rise of Strategy as a Bitcoin-centric treasury model highlights a broader trend in the corporate world. As inflationary pressures and interest rate uncertainty persist, firms are increasingly exploring alternative stores of value beyond fiat currencies. Bitcoin’s liquidity, divisibility, and global recognition make it an appealing option for treasury diversification.
By holding Bitcoin instead of cash, Strategy has positioned itself as a trailblazer in digital asset treasury management.
Outlook: Strategy Eyes Further Capital Efficiency
With its bitcoin strategy already outperforming traditional benchmarks and market expectations, Strategy plans to expand its at-the-market equity program (STRD) to support future acquisitions and capital efficiency initiatives.
As of now, Strategy is not only one of the top corporate Bitcoin holders but also a case study in modern treasury innovation. The company’s blend of cryptocurrency assets and equity products continues to draw investor attention, particularly as Bitcoin hovers near all-time highs.
