Stablecoin giant seeks to diversify beyond USDT yield income amid record profits

Tether, the world’s largest stablecoin issuer, is reportedly in talks with major investors including SoftBank and ARK Investment Management, as it prepares to sell around 3% of its equity — a deal that could value the company at up to $500 billion.

Mega fundraising round signals investor confidence

According to Bloomberg, the fundraising could involve a combined investment of up to $20 billion, underscoring the scale of demand from global investors. “The fact that firms of this caliber are circling Tether shows just how profitable and systemically relevant stablecoins have become,” one market analyst noted.

If the round succeeds, Tether would rank among the world’s most valuable private companies, on par with tech leaders such as OpenAI.

Stablecoins evolve into global financial assets

Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino confirmed that the company is exploring partnerships with a “select group of high-profile investors,” though he declined to name specifics. He also suggested Tether could expand into commodities, energy, and media as part of its next growth phase.

“Stablecoins are no longer just tools for crypto traders — they are becoming strategic assets in the global financial system,” said a fintech researcher in London, noting that the US recently advanced regulation through the GENIUS Act to strengthen the dollar’s role worldwide.

Tether’s USDT currently dominates the market with a capitalization of nearly $174 billion, making it the most widely used dollar-pegged token.

Moving beyond interest-driven profits

Backed by large US Treasury holdings and more than 100,000 Bitcoin in reserves, Tether posted $4.9 billion in net income in Q2 2025 — a 277% year-on-year increase. Much of this success has been fueled by high short-term US Treasury yields.

However, analysts warn that declining interest rates could pressure revenue. “Diversification is crucial for Tether — it cannot rely solely on Treasury yields to sustain profitability at this scale,” said a New York-based crypto economist.

By pursuing strategic investments and attracting top global backers, Tether appears set on transforming itself from a stablecoin issuer into a diversified financial powerhouse.
