Cryptocurrency adoption in Venezuela is accelerating as the national currency, the bolĂvar, continues to lose value. With inflation exceeding 229% in May 2024, Venezuelans are turning to digital assets and stablecoins to preserve their purchasing power and conduct everyday transactions.

Crypto Payments Become Mainstream

From small convenience stores to large retail chains, businesses are increasingly accepting payments in cryptocurrencies through platforms like Binance and Airtm. Many companies are also paying employees in stablecoins such as USDT to safeguard wages against devaluation.

Some universities now offer blockchain and crypto-related courses, highlighting the growing role of digital assets in the economy. According to the Chainalysis 2024 Crypto Adoption Index, Venezuela ranks 13th globally, with usage surging by 110% in one year.

Why Venezuelans Turn to Crypto

The collapse of the bolĂvar, which lost over 70% of its value since October, has left citizens with limited financial options. Local banks face operational challenges, and foreign currency shortages make access to dollars difficult.

According to BITX economists “Venezuelans use cryptocurrencies out of necessity,” as inflation erodes savings and banking restrictions complicate transactions. Remittances in crypto have also surged, accounting for nearly $461 million of the $5.4 billion sent to Venezuela in 2023.

Despite the rise in adoption, challenges remain. US sanctions on the financial sector restrict some crypto services, while internet connectivity issues slow down transactions in remote areas.

The government’s stance is inconsistent. While it launched the Petro digital currency in 2018, the project failed in 2023. Regulatory uncertainty persists, creating additional risks for businesses and users.
